We understand that choosing a House Sign is a very personal process and it’s sometimes not an easy decision to make. Quite often this is why signs that have passed their best tend to be left in situ.
If you have considered a House Sign but need some assistance or guidance with choosing the right solution, or would like this style sign made in a different size, then please get in touch and we can help with your decision making.
MATERIALSÂ
To make these House Signs we use Welsh Grey Slate and PRIME EUROPEAN OAK. Â
Welsh Grey Slate, generally regarded as one of the finest slates in the World. It is typically 12mm thick, though it can be up to 16mm, with visible graining and a smooth surface. Welsh Grey Slate is quarried from the Cwt-y-Bugail Quarry above Ffestiniog in North Wales.
Prime European Oak, all from sustainable sources and FSC/PEFC certified. It is typically golden-brown in colour, with a straight grain and a medium to course texture
To paint the text and/or image we use masonry paint, which is sealed with a matt varnish
MAKING PROCESS
Initially we construct the OAK FRAME, making each part from a solid piece of oak. First we cut the timber to size and then each part is lightly chamfered and sanded. After that we glue and joint each piece of the frame so it is stable and secure. Once it has been assembled we fit the screw inserts which are for fixing the slate. Finally we treat the frame with 2 coats of OSMO WR Base Coat followed by 3 coats of OSMO UV Protection Oil. If you prefer your Oak to be left untreated please let us know by adding a NOTE at checkout stageÂ
The first stage of making the slate sign is to engrave your chosen inscription. After that, we drill the holes for fixing before moving onto the painting process. This process is completed by hand, and each sign has 8 coats of paint, applied using a 1mm brush to fill in the area of each letter, number or image. This process takes between 2-3 weeks to complete as each coat must be fully annealed before applying the next. Once the painting process is finished the slate is sealed with 2-4 coats of a matt sealer. This sealer protects the paint and enhances the overall appearance of the House Sign.
SHIPPING YOUR SLATE & OAK HOUSE SIGN
The OAK frame is fully assembled prior to despatch so it is ready for installation upon receipt. The Slate sign is packaged separately and will require fixing to the oak frame after it has been installed.  We recommend that the OAK frame be fully installed and checked for stability, before the SLATE is fixed. The inserts fitted to the oak frame make attaching the slate simple and straightforward. The secure machine screws and bit required to attach the slate to the oak frame are sent with the slate sign.
These House Signs are sent by Parcelforce or DPD, the cost of which is determined by it’s size and weight. Â
FIXING YOUR SLATE & OAK HOUSE SIGN
When installing your House Sign it is important to ensure the ground is suitable to hold and maintain the sign. If installing it into sandy soil you may wish to consider using a form of concrete to set the posts. Some clients choose to cover the below ground section of the posts with a membrane. If you are unsure about the installation it may be wise to seek professional advice.
When attaching the Slate to the Oak frame it is important to tighten the screws gradually, moving from one to another. Over tightening one, could result in damage.Â
CARING FOR YOUR SLATE & OAK HOUSE SIGN
Being a natural material and exposed to the elements, you should expect that the OAK will silver down (weather) over time. Exposure to water reacts with the natural tannins which causes blackening and exposure to UV rays turns the oak a silvery hue. The two elements combined effect what is referred to as silvering down. Weathering of the OAK is a natural process and whilst it cannot be prevented, it is possible to slow the weathering process by retreating your sign
We recommend that you retreat the OAK twice yearly, preferably before the start of the winter and summer seasons. There is no harm in retreating it more than twice yearly, if for example it is sited in a prevailing position and subject to high levels of wind, rain or sun.
Please be sure when ordering this sign that you are aware of how time will affect the OAK.
Ongoing maintenance of the Slate Sign should be minimal, and possibly extend to a periodic wipe/wash down. If you want to keep the slate sign looking crisp then we suggest a coat of varnish or exterior sealer applied annually.

Wherever possible we use paper or cardboard packaging. Of course we have a duty to do our bit for the environment, whilst at the same time ensuring our products arrive undamaged. Where we find it necessary to use alternative packaging, all of it can be recycled so please do your bit too.
