We understand choosing a House Sign is a very personal process and sometimes not easy to make a decision. Quite often this is why signs that have passed their best tend to be left in situ.
If you have considered a House Sign but need some assistance or guidance with choosing the right solution, or would like this style sign made in a different size, then please get in touch and we can help with your decision making.
To make these House Signs we use PRIME EUROPEAN OAK. In other words the best timber for exterior use
MAKING AN OAK HOUSE SIGN
First step is to cut the timber to size. Next we prepare the oak by chamfering the edges, drilling the fixing holes and sanding the timber. We then move on to the engraving process. Whilst this is done by machine it takes several passes to complete the process, so as to ensure the timber does not spelch. Once the oak has been engraved we move on to treating the timber. It has 2 coats of OSMO WR Base Coat followed by 3 coats of OSMO UV Protection Oil. If you prefer your Oak to be left untreated please let us know by adding a NOTE at checkout stage
We send all items via Royal Mail or Parcelforce using a Signed For service. Shipping costs are determined by the size and weight of the item ordered, however you can choose whether the item is shipped first or second class. Shipping costs for multiple items on the same order will therefore be determined by the total weight and size of the packaging required to ship.
FIXING YOUR HOUSE SIGN
When installing your House Sign it is important to have the appropriate fixings and screw length. This will ensure it is stable and secure when mounted. As OAK has a high natural tannic acid content it is imperative to use either BRASS or STAINLESS STEEL screws to fix it in place. These materials are less reactive when exposed to water and tannic acid in the oak. Therefore, they are less likely to cause deep blackening of the timber.
CARING FOR YOUR OAK HOUSE SIGN
Being a natural material and exposed to the elements, you should expect that the OAK will silver down (weather) over time. Exposure to water reacts with the natural tannins which causes blackening and exposure to UV rays turns the oak a silvery hue. The two elements combined effect what is referred to as silvering down. Weathering of the OAK is a natural process and whilst it cannot be prevented, it is possible to slow the weathering process by retreating your sign
We recommend that you retreat the OAK twice yearly, preferably before the start of the winter and summer seasons. There is no harm in retreating it more than twice yearly, if for example it is sited in a prevailing position and subject to high levels of wind, rain or sun.
Please be sure when ordering this sign that you are aware of how time will affect the OAK.
Wherever possible we use paper or cardboard packaging. Of course we have a duty to do our bit for the environment, whilst at the same time ensuring our products arrive undamaged. Where we find it necessary to use alternative packaging, all of it can be recycled so please do your bit too.
All measurements are approximate. Even though we take every care to make each item to the dimensions specified, slight variations are possible and should be anticipated.
