We understand choosing a House Sign is a very personal process and it’s sometimes not an easy decision to make. Quite often this is why signs that have passed their best tend to be left in situ.
If you have considered a House Sign but need some assistance or guidance with choosing the right solution, or would like this style sign made in a different size, then please get in touch and we can help with your decision making.
MATERIALSÂ
To make these House Signs we use Welsh Slate and PRIME EUROPEAN OAK. Â
Welsh Grey Slate
Generally regarded as one of the finest slates in the World. It is typically 6mm thick, with visible graining and a riven surface. The slate is handcut, which produces what is known as a dressed or feathered edge. Welsh Grey Slate is quarried from the Cwt-y-Bugail Quarry above Ffestiniog in North Wales.
Prime European Oak
All from sustainable sources and FSC/PEFC certified. It is typically golden-brown in colour, with a straight grain and a medium to course texture
To paint the text and/or image we use masonry paint, which is sealed with a matt varnish
MAKING PROCESSÂ
The first step is to prepare the OAK. Once the timber has been cut to size we then prepare the keyholes or drill holes, lightly chamfer the edges and give it a final sanding before being treated. Our preferred treatement is 2 coats of OSMO WR Base Coat followed by 3 coats of OSMO UV Protection Oil. If you prefer your Oak to be left untreated please let us know by adding a NOTE at checkout stageÂ
The next stage is to cut and drill the slate in preparation for it being engraved. Once the slate has been engraved we move on to the painting process, all of which is completed by hand. Each sign has 8 coats of paint, applied using a 1mm brush to fill in the area of each letter, number or image. This process takes between 2-3 weeks to complete as each coat must be fully annealed before applying the next. Once the painting process is finished the slate is sealed with 2-4 coats of a matt sealer. This sealer protects the paint and enhances the overall appearance of the House Sign.
Finally we attach the SLATE to the OAK ready for despatch. Â
FIXING YOUR SLATE AND OAK HOUSE SIGN
When fixing your house sign we recommend either BRASS or marine grade STAINLESS STEEL screws for use with the OAK. Oak has a high natural tannic acid content which causes the timber to turn black when exposed to moisture and ferrous metals. Â
CARING FOR YOUR SLATE AND OAK HOUSE SIGN
Being a natural material and exposed to the elements, you should expect that the OAK will silver down (weather) over time. Exposure to water reacts with the natural tannins and exposure to UV rays turns the oak a silvery hue. The two elements combined effect what is referred to as silvering down. Weathering of the OAK is a natural process and whilst it cannot be prevented, it is possible to slow the weathering process by retreating your sign
We recommend that you retreat the OAK twice yearly, preferably before the start of the winter and summer seasons. There is no harm in retreating it more than twice yearly, if for example it is sited in a prevailing position and subject to high levels of wind, rain or sun.
Please be sure when ordering this sign that you are aware of how time will affect the OAK.
Ongoing maintenance of the Slate Sign should be minimal, and possibly extend to a periodic wipe/wash down. If you want to keep the slate sign looking crisp then we suggest a coat of varnish or exterior sealer applied annually.
