OAK FRAMED PERSONALISED SLATE.  These delightful pieces make perfect WEDDING or ANNIVERSARY gifts.  Handcrafted in solid oak fitted with an engraved slate plaque.  A slightly riven piece of Welsh Slate, Grey or Heather, featuring 4 lines of engraved text of your choosing, framed in solid oak.

The example in the photographs show 4 lines of text, each slightly different in size.  Once you have placed your order we will contact you via email to determine your preferred layout of the engraving, along with the sizing of the text.   When filling out the ‘engraving’ field please be sure to put a / to denote the end of one line and start of another.

MATERIALS 

To make these pieces we use kiln dried PRIME EUROPEAN OAK.  In other words, we use top grade timber.  All our OAK comes from sustainable sources and is FSC/PEFC certified.  Typically golden-brown in colour, with a straight grain and a medium to course texture.

The slate is Welsh, either grey or Heather.  Welsh Slate is generally regarded as one of the finest slates in the World.  It has been used for centuries on all kinds of buildings, including the likes of St Pancreas and Kings Cross Stations, Buckingham Palace, as well as Number 10 Downing Street.  In other words, this is a prime quality material.  

Welsh Grey Slate

Typically a dark grey colour with visible veining on the surface.  Occasionally Welsh Grey contains small elements of pyrite, also known as fool’s gold.  These inclusions are naturally occurring and in no affect the quality or durability of the slate.

Welsh Heather Slate

A plum/red tone and generally a smoother surface texture than welsh grey, with minimal evidence of veining.  Welsh Heather sometimes contains small mineral deposits, which are greenish in colour.  Again, these are naturally occurring, cannot be removed and in no way affect the beauty of this natural material.

MAKING PROCESS 

We individually make every item to order.  Our first step is to prepare the oak, which involves cutting, planing, drilling, routing and sanding the timber.  After that, we prepare the key holes, which are used for wall mounting the frame.  The next step is to prepare the pocket holes, which join together each one of the 4 pieces of the frame.  Once the oak is prepared we move on to the slate.

First, we cut the slate to size before it is coated with oil.  This coating enhances the grain and texture of the slate and improves it’s overall appearance.  When the oil is cured, we then start the engraving process.  After the slate has been engraved, the oak frame is then waxed in preparation for fitting the slate.  Once the slate has been glued in situ, we place a piece of ply on the back to protect the slate and finish it with framing tape.  Both the slate and the ply backing are recessed into the oak frame so the whole piece sits flat to the wall when mounted.

PACKAGING YOUR OAK FRAMED PERSONALISED SLATE

All items are boxed before being packaged for despatch.  Wherever possible we use paper or cardboard packaging.  Of course we have a duty to do our bit for the environment, whilst at the same time ensuring our products arrive undamaged.  Because it is sometimes necessary to use alternative packaging, all of it can be recycled so please do your bit too.

SHIPPING 

We send all items via Royal Mail or Parcelforce using a Signed For service.  Shipping costs are determined by the size and weight of the item ordered, however you can choose whether the item is shipped first or second class.  Shipping costs for multiple items on the same order will therefore be determined by the total weight and size of the packaging required to ship.

CARING FOR YOUR OAK FRAMED PERSONALISED SLATE

Most importantly avoid positioning the frame close to a direct heat source, for instance on top of a wood burning stove.  Equally important, do not place it close to a water source.  An occasional dry dusting should be all that is required.  To dust the slate we recommend using a small brush and a duster for the frame.  Take care not to get oil on the engraving on the slate as it will dull it’s appearance.  It should be dry wiped only.

PLEASE NOTE:

All measurements are approximate.  Whilst we take every care to make each item to the dimensions specified, a few mm difference is possible, therefore a slight variance should be anticipated.
