We are husband and wife, Paul and Jo and together we run Slate and Oak from our base in rural Nottinghamshire. This picture, (Jo pulling a silly face!) was taken during an afternoon jaunt to the Lace Market, Nottingham where we enjoyed some great food, a few craft beers and a spot of fabulous architecture. We rarely get the opportunity so when it comes about we grab it with both hands.
Established since 2012, we specialise in a range of engraved House signs, personalised oak gifts and linen lampshades. Our materials, all carefully sourced from British suppliers are selected for their quality, durability and character. Our methods, combine aged old techniques with some more modern technologies, and we are proud to make not manufacture. Each product is individually made with every aspect of the making process undertaken by either or both of us.
Working with raw materials that have natural characteristics, enable us to present our products in such a way that you can recognise the raw material from which it is made, but equally can appreciate the transformation from it’s original state. Natural linen, printed in Lancashire with interesting texture in the weave and slub of the fabric. Slate from North Wales and Cumbria with individual graining and texture. European oak with a distinctive character and the occasional knot or crack.
Our approach to design is the same today as it’s always been. We like to create stylish, yet simple products. They must be pleasing to the eye, and above all, practical in a traditional or contemporary home.
Since all aspects of the making process are done by us most products can be personalised. Personalisation can either be very subtle or a bit more of a statement. Whichever you choose, it’s the personalisation that makes it truly unique and a one-off. Personalised items are usually given as gifts, be it a wedding, anniversary or birthday. In our opinion giving something personalised shows real thought has gone into selecting the item and the message that conveys. If you are thinking of a personalised gift and would like some ideas, please get in touch. We are very happy to work with your ideas. Likewise, we are also happy to adjust our designs to suit your needs. Just tell us how you want the finished piece to look and that’s what we will deliver.
If you are looking for a piece made to your dimensions and specification, then please get in touch. Over the years we have worked with numerous clients to help them bring their idea to life. Although this usually extends the lead time, I believe most clients are happy to wait for exactly what they want. First of all we start with a rough sketch. Next we produce an initial proof of the design for feedback. In other words, we produce an image of how the final piece will look. The proof can be amended as many times as necessary until it meets the brief. Once this stag is reach, we can then forge ahead with the making process. Commissions tend to have particular poignance for the client, so it is a real privilege to take on these projects.
