MATERIALS traditional swing
To make a TRADITIONAL SWING we use PRIME EUROPEAN OAK. In other words the best timber for exterior use. The seat is made from ONE solid piece of oak so you can be confident it won’t fall apart. The rope is 18mm manilla, with 6 meters at each end. If you feel you need extra length, don’t worry, you can add as much as you feel is required. Extra lengths of rope are charged by the metre. Usually a length of rope wrapped several times around the branch is adequate, however, we also supply brackets for fixing if required.
MAKING PROCESS traditional swing
Once the timber has been cut to size we prepare the oak by chamfering the edges, drilling the holes for the rope and sanding the timber. Next is the engraving process. Whilst this is done by machine it takes several passes to complete the process, so as to ensure the timber does not spelch. Once the oak seat has been engraved we move on to treating the timber. Each swing 2 coats of OSMO WR Base Coat followed by 3 coats of OSMO UV Protection Oil. If you prefer your Oak to be left untreated please let us know by adding a NOTE at checkout stage. Finally, with the swing seat fully treated we can fit the rope ready for despatch.
SHIPPING traditional swing
We send all items via Royal Mail or Parcelforce using a Signed For service. Shipping costs for multiple items on the same order will therefore be determined by the total weight and size of the packaging required to ship.
FIXING YOUR SWING
Please be sure that you have a strong enough tree or frame on which to mount the swing. Furthermore, be sure that the swing is stable and secure before being used. Typically, a length of rope would be wrapped around the fixing branch in a swing hitch knot. This type of knot is self tightening, but loosens when it is not under load. Brackets can also be used to secure the swing. If you are unsure about fixing your swing, we strongly recommend seeking professional guidance.
IMPORTANT – we accept no responsibility or liability in connection with the use of our swings.
Being a natural material and exposed to the elements, you should expect that the OAK will silver down (weather) over time. Exposure to water reacts with the natural tannins which causes blackening and exposure to UV rays turns the oak a silvery hue. The two elements combined effect what is referred to as silvering down. Weathering of the OAK is a natural process and whilst it cannot be prevented, it is possible to slow the weathering process by retreating your sign
We recommend that you retreat the OAK twice yearly, perhaps once before the spring and again before the winter. There is no harm in retreating it more than twice yearly, if for example it is sited in a prevailing position and subject to high levels of wind, rain or sun. You may also wish to consider bringing the swing in during the winter months so it is not unduly exposed to the elements.
Please be sure when ordering this item that you are aware of how time will affect the OAK.
