We understand choosing a House Sign is a very personal process and it’s sometimes not an easy decision to make.  Quite often this is why signs that have passed their best tend to be left in situ.
If you have considered a House Sign but need some assistance or guidance with choosing the right solution, or would like this style sign made in a different size, then please get in touch and we can help with your decision making.

MATERIALS

To make these House Signs we use already split Welsh Slate, either Grey or Heather.  Welsh Slate is generally regarded as one of the finest slates in the World.  It has been used for centuries on all kinds of buildings, including the likes of St Pancreas and Kings Cross Stations, Buckingham Palace, as well as Number 10 Downing Street.  In other words, this is a prime quality material.  It is typically 5.5mm thick, though it can be up to 8mm, and it has visible graining and texture to the surface and edges.  Welsh Grey Slate is quarried from the Cwt-y-Bugail Quarry above Ffestiniog in North Wales and Welsh Heather Blue comes from the Penrhyn Quarry near Bethesda, also in North Wales.  To paint the text and/or image we use masonry paint, which is sealed with a matt varnish.

COLOUR VARIATIONS

Welsh Grey Slate

Typically a dark grey colour with visible veining on the surface.  Occasionally Welsh Grey contains small elements of pyrite, also known as fool’s gold.  These inclusions are naturally occurring and in no affect the quality or durability of the slate.

Welsh Heather Slate

A plum/red tone and generally a smoother surface texture than welsh grey, with minimal evidence of veining.  Welsh Heather sometimes contains small mineral deposits, which are green’ish’ in colour.  Again, these are naturally occurring, cannot be removed and in no way affect the beauty of this natural material.

MAKING PROCESS

Each piece of SLATE is cut to size using a traditional hand guillotine.  This method of cutting produces what is known as a dressed or feathered edge, sometimes referred to as rustic in appearance.  Once we have cut the slate to size, it is washed and then engraved.  After that, we drill the holes for fixing before moving onto the painting process.  This process is completed by hand, and each sign has 8 coats of paint, applied using a 1mm brush to fill in the area of each letter, number or image.  This process takes between 2-3 weeks to complete as each coat must be fully annealed before applying the next.  Once the painting process is finished the slate is sealed with 2-4 coats of a matt sealer.  This sealer protects the paint and enhances the overall appearance of the House Sign.

FIXING YOUR RIVEN SLATE HOUSE NUMBER

When fixing your House Sign it is important to tighten the screws gradually, moving from one to another.  Over tightening one, could result in cracking.  It is important to have the appropriate wall fixings and screw length to ensure your sign is stable and secure when mounted.

CARING FOR YOUR RIVEN SLATE HOUSE NUMBER

Generally these House Signs do not require any maintenance.  However, most customers tell us they like to wipe them down occasionally to keep them looking crisp.  Naturally the elements will eventually weather the appearance and so a periodic reapplication of sealer will help to slow this weathering process.

PLEASE NOTE:

All measurements are approximate.  Even though we take every care to make each item to the dimensions specified, slight variations are possible and should be anticipated.
